CMC digunakan dalam ilmu makanan sebagai pengubah viskositas atau pengental, dan untuk menstabilkan emulsi di berbagai produk es krim. Sebagai aditif makanan, memiliki E nomor E466. Hal ini juga penyusun banyak produk non-makanan, seperti pribadi pelumas, pasta gigi, pencahar, pil diet, cat berbasis air, deterjen, tekstil ukuran, dan berbagai produk kertas. Hal ini digunakan terutama karena telah viskositas tinggi, nontoxic, dan umumnya dianggap sebagai akan hypoallergenic sebagai sumber utama serat yang baik softwood pulp atau kapas linter. CMC digunakan secara ekstensif dalam gluten gratis [ 4] dan produk makanan lemak berkurang.[ 5] Di deterjen, hal ini digunakan sebagai tanah suspensi polimer dirancang untuk deposit ke kapas dan kain lainnya selulosa, menciptakan sebuah penghalang yang bermuatan negatif untuk tanah dalam larutan mencuci.  CMC is used in food science as a viscosity modifier or thickener, and to stabilize emulsions in various products including ice cream. As a food additive, it has E number E466. It is also a constituent of many non-food products, such as personal lubricants, toothpaste, laxatives, diet pills, water-based paints, detergents, textile sizing, and various paper products. It is used primarily because it has high viscosity, is nontoxic, and is generally considered to be hypoallergenic as the major source fiber is either softwood pulp or cotton linter.CMC is used extensively in gluten free and reduced fat food products. In laundry detergents, it is used as a soil suspension polymer designed to deposit onto cotton and other cellulosic fabrics, creating a negatively charged barrier to soils in the wash solution. CMC is used as a lubricant in nonvolatile eye drops ( artificial tears) . Sometimes, methyl cellulose ( MC) is used, but its nonpolar methyl groups ( -CH3) do not add any solubility or chemical reactivity to the base cellulose.
